Peace Warriors – Cato Manor, Durban

Ambassadors for Peace

The peace warrior program was initiated in Cato Manor, at Wiggins High School to help young people out of violence. The school is extremely poor and most students get by with hardly enough nutritious food.  At present we have 131 warriors who are active on the project which aims to use peer to peer counselling to understand non-violence and work towards a more peaceful future for all youth.
The program uses the arts, peace expression and meditation to help teenagers deal with violence in their homes and communities. The basis of positive action language and meditation techniques is used to build self esteem. The kids are allowed to form their own groups and meet regularly during their life orientation class to discuss and express different forms of non-violence and peace.
At present we have 8 groups, the singers, dancers, motivational talkers, poetry, drama, agriculture and writers. Each group has been given an assignment to work on using non violence to express violence rather than violence to express non-violence. For example, the Agriculture students are designing a Peace Garden which the SAPN is raising funds to help them build.
This method was chosen as many children struggled with low self esteem and peaceful expression. Mindful meditation has also helped our students immensely.
We are so proud of our Peace Warriors who will soon be visiting other schools to spread the concept of the peace warrior program and the message of non-violence and peace.
